Our Heritage
Founded in 1876, The Amogerone Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, Inc. is the oldest fire company in the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut.
Amogerone is a who, not a what... On July 18, 1640, Amogerone, the Achem of the Asamuck tribe, sold the land area now known as Greenwich, Connecticut to representatives of the New Haven Colony in return for 25 coats.
The name of the company memorializes Chief Amogerone’s independent spirit, if not his business acumen.
Today, the Greenwich Fire Department is a combination department that is staffed by approximately 100 career firefighters and 100 volunteer firefighters. Together, we respond on average to over 4,200 calls every year.
While the majority of the calls are handled with great expertise by our career firefighters, the response to some emergencies, including structure fires and extreme weather, requires more manpower, and that means volunteers.

Our emergency calls range from minor fire alarm activations to structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, and hazmat incidents. Equipment consists of 14 Engines, 3 Ladders, a Heavy Rescue, 2 Tankers, 5 Squads, 3 Patrols, and a Special Operations Command Unit. GFD operates this equipment out of 8 fire houses within Greenwich (and Banksville, NY).
